Why I haven't been posting!

I started this blog in December of last year to keep the community updated on the lastest happenings of The Star's Newspapers in Education Program. However, I have not posted as much as I would have liked to but I have a good excuse! Her name is Jessie and she was born in January! My husband and I waited a long time(10 years) to have children but she was worth the wait. I returned to work at the end of April and promise to try and be more faithful in blogging!

On Thursday, May 22nd The Star will hold its second annual Distinguished Seniors Awards for Excellence ceremony at Cleveland Community College. About NIE

The main goal of the Newspapers in Education program is to promote literacy within the community and help get educational tools to teachers for use in the classroom. Any teacher in Cleveland County can have The Star delivered to their classrooms at no cost to them.

During the week we have daily features that teachers can use in their classrooms. They are:
Monday: Agri Corner
Tuesday: Character Education
Wednesday: Literacy
Thursday My Kids Scoop
Friday: World of Wonder
We also sponsor many special events and contest throughout the school year. Here are a few of them:
  • Do the Right Thing - Six times during the school year we honor students who have "done the right thing." Nominations are accepted in grade categories K-4, 5-7, and 8-12. Winners are selected by our the sponsors of the program and are honored at a special luncheon.
  • The Star Spelling Bee - The Star sponsors the local Spelling Bee to determine what student from this area will go to the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Students in grades 4 - 8 can participate. The next local Star Spelling Bee will be March 20, 2008 at Cleveland Community College.
  • Erma Drum Poetry Contest - The Erma Drum Poetry Contest honors a woman who had a great love for poetry. Erma Drum worked as The Star's Women's and Society Editor for 34 years. Held every year during April, National Poetry Month, the Poetry Contest is open to all students in public and private schools in Cleveland County in addition to Gardner-Webb University and Cleveland County Schools. Deadline to enter the Poetry Contest is February 29th, 2008. Winners will be honored at the Erma Drum Poetry Festival on April 8, 2008 at Cleveland Community College.
  • Red Ribbon Essay Contest - During October, students are asked to write an essay about their "Anti-Drug!" Winners are announced during Red Ribbon Week and winning essays are published in The Star.
